Understanding a teachers’
learning community
Abstract
In order to study professional
development, it is essential to understand their learning from professional
development activities. The context of communities as an ongoing venue for teacher
learning has lately attracted attention from researchers and teacher educators.
The purpose of this study was to understand the process of development in a
learning community. I examined how the members in a learning community each
perceive their practices and community differently and what struggles each
member has in building the learning community. To do so, I investigated a
mathematics teachers’ community including preservice teachers, inservice
teachers, and a teacher educator. The results show that the participants
perceived their community activities differently: professional learning
community, pseudo learning community, and early pseudo learning community. The
participants had difficulty building the learning community. This study helps
researchers understand the learning of mathematics teachers in the community.
