Research Opportunities Each year, mainly in the summer, there are numerous opportunities across the country for students to participate in research projects. These allow students to experience first-hand how basic research is done and to contribute consequentially. These programs have many sponsors and cover a wide range of mathematical topics. One popular program is the "Research Experiences for Undergraduates" (REU) sponsored by the NSF. Each summer, REU sites spring up throughout the country. In the summer of 1993, Jo Claire Burkett participated in a program at Florida State University. She worked in the area of Topology/ Combinatorial Group Theory and studied the n-Fold Coverings of the Figure-Eight. In the summer of 1995 Patricia West participated in a research program at Spellman College. We encourage you to consider such experiences because they are rewarding. Closer to Kennesaw, you may opt for a Directed Study, Co-op, or Internship. Such programs offer opportunities to work one-on-one with a faculty member or to have a work experience related to the major. All three may provide deeper study and possibly fulfill your capstone experience.
