Dear Student,

Congratulations on your selection of mathematics or mathematics education as your KSU major.  Many do not realize the significance of KSU’s commitment to mathematics teaching excellence.  We have the fourth largest number of math majors graduating among all state universities in Georgia. In mathematics education, we have the second largest number of graduates.  We are growing quickly in both math and math education because of our faculty’s dedication to teaching excellence. KSU is becoming one of Georgia’s schools of choice to study mathematics.

The process of becoming a math or math education major starts by completing the Major Declaration form and turning it in to our office (SC507) or by submitting this form electronically.  This will start the process of assigning you an advisor who is a faculty member in our Department. (You may request a particular faculty member as your advisor on the Declaration form).

It is important that you contact your advisor and set-up an initial appointment.  In this initial meeting, you will get to know your advisor and select courses to enable your timely graduation from KSU.  Your advisor is interested in your success.  Prior to registration every semester, you should speak with your advisor in order to ensure that your course of study is on track.

Your study of mathematics will encompass a variety of different areas of mathematics such as analysis (calculus), algebra, discrete mathematics, numerical methods, and statistics.   In addition, in your junior or senior year, you will have a “capstone experience” which might be an internship, a special topics course, or some other project directed by a mathematics faculty member. There are many career opportunities for mathematics majors in business, government and education.

I wish you the very best in your KSU experience. You have chosen a major and school that will set you apart from others.

Sincerely,

Victor Kane, Chair
