NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION GRANT

Award # 0728660, duration 10/01/2007 - 10/01/2012

( FLYER and POSTER )

College of Science and Mathematics at Kennesaw State University has been awarded a grant by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to increase the retention and graduation rates of students in one of the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Through the Scholarship Program in Science and Mathematics at Kennesaw State University, NSF is strengthening the U.S scientific workforce by supporting academically talented and financially disadvantaged students who would otherwise have difficulties reaching their goals. The project is awarding 160 scholarships over a four-year period to undergraduates in mathematics, biology, biotechnology, chemistry, biochemistry, or computer science. Students who satisfy eligibility requirements (including a minimum 3.0 GPA) are qualified to receive annual scholarships up to $3,000 , depending upon financial need.

A. SCHOLARSHIP ELIGIBILITY:

To be eligible to participate in the scholarship program, students must: (1) Be U.S. citizens, nationals, aliens admitted as refugees, permanent resident aliens; (2) Be enrolled full time in a baccalaureate degree program in one of the STEM disciplines (mathematics, biology, biotechnology, chemistry, biochemistry, computer science, information technology) as shown in the departmental records; (3) Demonstrate academic potential via a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Recommendations from teachers, counselors, or adisors may substitute for a lower cumulative GPA, but not lower than 2.8 on the same scale; (4) Demonstrate financial need as defined by the U.S. Department of Education.

B. CRITERIA FOR RETENTION OF SCHOLARSHIPS:

In order to retain the scholarship, the S-STEM scholar must continue to satisfy all the eligibility requirements mentioned above, enroll in the learning communities specially designed for the NSF students, attend classes on a regular basis, attend the monthly meetings with their advisors, participate in at least 3 seminars/talks every semester, visit the Career Services once every semester and make sufficient progress toward the degree in each semester.

C. APPLICATION:

The applications for 2009-2010 academic year will be accepted beginning late fall 2008. Details are still to come.
